The OhioLINK Historic and Archival Collections is a database of digital images from OhioLINK institutions. Currently, the database contains digitized photos from the Wright Brothers Collection held at Wright State University, letters and documents from the E.W. Scripps Papers archive held at Ohio University, digitized photos from the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, and from the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

Highlight a field from the list, type search word(s) in the box, and click the SEARCH button (or press the ENTER key).

Keyword: motor
(finds records that have the word "motor" anywhere, e.g. title, subject, description)

Keyword: flyer and 1908
(finds records that have the terms Flyer and 1908 anywhere)

Keyword: scripps and wilson
(finds records that have the words Scripps and Wilson anywhere, such as creator and correspondent)

Creator: octave and chanute
(word order and capitalization do not matter; finds works created by Octave Chanute)

Date: To search for the specirfic date of 12/17/1903, use 19031217
(finds items dated December 17, 1903)

Date: 190%
(finds items dated anytime from 1900 to 1909)

Do not include punctuation in a search.

PHRASE: Two words together are automatically searched as an exact phrase.

Keyword: dedication ceremony
(finds records that have the exact phrase "dedication ceremony", anywhere)

AND: To find two or more words in the same record (not necessarily adjacent), use AND.

Keyword: scripps and photo
(finds records that contain both Scripps and "photo")

NOT: To exclude records that contain a particular word, use NOT.

Keyword: home not greenfield
(finds records that contain "home" and excludes those that also contain Greenfield)

TRUNCATION: Use the % character for truncation. The percent wildcard specifies that any characters can appear in multiple positions represented by the wildcard.

Keyword: rac%
(finds items that have the stem rac - e.g. race, racing, racetrack, etc.)

Keyword: photograph$
(finds photograph, photographer, photographs, photography)

Limit By Collection: Select from this menu to limit your results to a particular collection, or source, of images.

Limit by Year: Select from this menu to limit your results to one specific year.

(finds photos of the wreck from the year 1908)

Sort By: Select how you prefer your search results to be arranged:

Display Records in Groups of: Select 6, 12, 30, or 45.


Search Results

The Search List shows a brief citation for each item (photograph, letter, or other document) retrieved by your search. Each brief citation includes the item's title, date, creator, location, and collection. Some works may not have values for all fields.

Use the scrollbar to view the results on a particular page. Use PREVIOUS | NEXT to navigate among pages. You can also navigate within the results list by using the JUMP box.

To see more information about a record, click on the title or the thumbnail.

Full Record: The full display for an item shows a more complete description of the item and a thumbnail of the work. The text description may include title, creator, date, work type, subjects, descriptive paragraph, repository (archive), and other fields as available.

To bookmark the page, use the URL provided below the Full Record display.

To view the full image, click on the thumbnail or View Image.

Certain elements of the Full Record are hypertext linked, such as Creator, Type, and Subject. Click a link to search the database using that element, e.g., to find all works on this subject.

Image: The image is a JPEG file. The image display also includes a subtitle of basic identifying text, such as title, creator, and repository. To view the image without the identifying text, click on the "JPEG image" or "TIFF image" link.


Browsing

Browse allows you to view the alphabetic list of terms in an index, such as Date, Creator, Place, Object Type, etc. This is a quick way to see the values in an index and find all works in a category.

Click on an index to browse. Depending on the length of the list, you will see either the complete list or a series of pages to view.
